Microsoft Flight Simulator 2020 vs X-Plane [A CFI's Review for Real Pilots]
More free videos on using X-Plane for pilot proficiency are at: pilotworkshop.com/sim-videos/?
Which flight simulator is better for real pilot training: Microsoft Flight Simulator 2020 or X-Plane 11? Licensed pilots looking to build proficiency in a simulator require more accuracy than their non-pilot counterparts when it comes to items like airport marking accuracy, ATC functionality, GPS systems fidelity, flight models, weather and other flight sim parameters.
In this video, Ryan Koch, a CFII who has coached real-world pilots remotely via flight sim, and Course Designer/Producer for PilotWorkshops (pilotworkshop.com), digs into the differences between X-Plane and this debut version of MSF...

    Option 3 sounds the best, Cross check altitude by asking tower, check gps altitude and baro alt at FAF. will break out at 800. Don’t want to fly in IMC for too long with icing conditions and potentially inop equipment. Worst option is 5

    That, I think, is one of the best 'accident chain' examples out there. It's not totally dark, It's not totally mountainous, etc. But it does show why a straight in into a unfamiliar airport might not be a good idea. And that night VFR is always a form of IFR. You got to fly it by the numbers.

    He just kept jumping from one rock to the next. Never looking back if he had to retreat. Always burning bridges as he went. His first Watch Out was that he HAD to get back. He showed VERY BAD Aeronautical Decision Making. He never had a consistent plan he didn't work in the system and didn't really know how the system is supposed to work. You don't just get a pop up clearance, then cancel, then get another one, then cancel that. He never really had a realistic back up plan. He was creating a hazard in the system and he made all G.A. pilots look bad. Those controllers knew he was in distress and gave him special treatment. Did he really learn what he should have learned from it? Not likely because it wasn't that he just got caught above the clouds. It was more about his whole ADM from the moment that he HAD to get to his destination and got worse from there. If he really wanted to help learn from his mistakes he would of had to have had a three hour long video. With illustrations!

    A very good video! Thank you! I bought both sims and preferred X-Plane, but now I'm done at 12-17 fps, so I think even with a major hardware update I won't get more than 20 fps. And then it's game over. :( MSFS on the other hand provides me with 40 fps and after my HW update it will be 60 or close. So practically MSFS remains my only choice for now - until performance optimization will not become a priority for Laminar Research.

    And, here it is 2023. I have both and find that X-Plane 11 has just slightly better physics rendering for the GA training aircraft used in the flight school I am attending. What is disappointing is that in order to get a basic steam-gauge C-172 in MSFS, you need to spring for the deluxe edition. To counter that issue, I fly the C-152 in MSFS. It handles almost exactly the same as the 172H model I am familiar with. The weather is much improved now. The ATC in both is still dismal. I am a student pilot, so all VFR for me. I have tried ILS approaches, and they both seem to be almost equal now. My one complaint with XP-11 is that the inaccuracies at my home field will never be fixed now that XP-12 has been released. So far neither sim has been updated to reflect the new runway alignment at KGDJ, so my pattern practice time is not very beneficial. How about a comparison of XP-12 to MSFS 2020? Is XP-12 worth me dropping $60 bucks for? Since my computer handles MSFS 2020 very well (nearly topped out in all categories thanks to 6GB DDR 6 VRAM), I would assume that XP-12 will also run well on it.

    To be honest: I'm not confirm with your POV. At first: You criticize the weather options in FS2020 but you don't show the weather effects in X-Plane 11. So I ask: why you dont show us the effects? Yes, um using both, x-plane on my PC and FS 2020 on my Xbox, but I think many people are watching this video to get some information about both programs before buying it. And yes, of course you said at the beginning of the video that FS 2020 is just came out and so third party applications and not out right now. But you compare X-Plane 11 with a some mods with a pure vanilla fs 2020. I think that's not the correct way for a serious comparison. That's just my point of view but i think it would be better to wait for the third party apps BEFORE you've made this video. Ps: Just a question: is there a chance for third party apps for xbox one pilots? ;)

    X-plane is good in many ways, but unfortunately after adding reshade, cloud enhancments, ground enhancements, and having to download fucking thousands of libraries for airport scenery which is mighty irritating and on top of that you have to edit the scenery.ini file for it to even load at all. I hope laminar make xp12 more user friendly and have a community folder like in msfs2020

    Asobo over at MSFS have no clue how an airplane flies, they only care how the SIM makes your feel. Try pulling an engine out on a piston twin and fly on one engine on both Sims. X-Plane gets it right.

      Haha yes. Bought the PMDG 737-700 and was disappointed. Systems are very good, but the flight physics and ground taxi are horrible. I went back to XP with Toliss and Zibo...and if MSFS does not improve their flight physics, will not return to MSFS.

  • @something7239
    @something7239 2 года назад

    The scenery in MS2020 isn't just prettier, it's useful and a part of the simulation aspect for anyone who enjoys VFR, while X-Plane misses entire prominent towns in my area and elsewhere. Big ones too. Somehow it even misses an entire lake. I'm not saying one is better than the other, but I do feel like for the sake of flying VFR saying the scenery is just nice for looking pretty and finding your house is an understatement. In the end of the day I fly for real plenty of times every week, I don't think it gets more realistic than that.

    Just saying, I always preferred X-Plane to Microshaft. Well, I guess you can tell my opinion just from the beginning of the comment. I had all the fight gear. Throttle quadrant, yoke, and rudder pedals. I also loved that I could input my own designs into X-plane to see how they would fly, or input published stats from a book on aircraft and expect it to perform pretty much as the actual plane would do. Edit: The last version of X-plane I have experience with was version 9.X

    • @maltimoto

      Me too...flight physics and overall feeling are much better in XP although MSFS might have better graphics. But XP graphics (modded) are good enough for me.

    How about ground handling/landing with wind and/or real wx? With fs2020, I find I MUST use autorudder or the 172 (and Twotter I prefer to fly) skid off the runway and nearly flip. Cessna 208 does the same thing…

    • @maltimoto
      @maltimoto 2 года назад

      Right. In the air, MSFS flight physics is still "ok" for me. But the moment you touch down...oh boy. How many times have I veered off the runway in my PMDG 737 when applying even small rudder input after landing. That is not realistic. XP is much better here.

    • @maltimoto
      @maltimoto 2 года назад

      Ground handling in MSFS...oh boy. XP is much better, even with PMDG/Fenix the ground taxi experience is very static and edgy in MSFS.

    • @maltimoto

      Regarding the scenery...XP 12 will look better (trees, lighting, better weather) but it will won't have satellite scenery. But you can create you own using Ortho4XP. But even then it wont reach MSFS's standards. However, I still prefer X-Plane because the flight physics are excellent and MSFS' flight physics are not so good. Manual flying in XP is so much better. Depends what you want. Great physics and ok graphics: XP, ok physics and great graphics: MSFS

    I have both sims, and both are good at what they are designed to do. Its cool to practice ground reference maneuvers, 8s on pylons and power off 180s in MSFS, as the real terrain just immerses you in the experience. Also nothing beats flying into Oshkosh in a Corsair on PilotEdge “Silver Corsair over Warbird”!! X-Plane really shines in IFR practice. Put reality-xp on realsimgear gns 530,430 stack and you have a capable platform. No crashes or bugs, just pure instrument flying in the stock King Air, on the Garmin databases with the PilotEdge controller throwing in complex instructions and route deviations, making MSFS seem like child’s play when you can barely find an approach in the database. So there you go, get both and decide for yourself.
